Running Network TV:  NYRRC Midnight New Year's Eve Run, by Art McCafferty
=========================================================================
Bucket List. Gary Morgan, Mr. Ubiquitous, brought us back another happy New York City Round Runners Club Midnight New Year's Eve Run.  Or some title like that. The video he brought back was exciting and provided the viewer with a taste of the race.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3J2IdpAVBsg

I ran this race four or five times in the earlier days of MR. I was there when one of the horse drawn carriages met a Greg Meyer led this fabled Midnight race. I think there were a couple of injuries, but the horse drawn carriages had an even earlier  curfew the following year.  One year was particularly memorable in that I was interviewed by a local tv station who loved that fact that I was from out of town and that I loved the race.  Another time I ran an event in the morning in Detroit, where I saw Emily Gail and Herb Squires and said hello.  I grabbed an afternoon flight to New York arrived to get my registration material and there were Emily and Herb helping out RD Fred LeBow.  I spent one somber night with Fred LeBow and at the time George Hirsch, Editor of now shelved "The Runner Magazine.".  A damper on the traditional afterglow party at the NYCRR building on 89th St., when it was learned that one of the runners had died.

Anyway,  I digress, Gary Morgan has covered events for  our Michigan Runner and Running Network channels for over a decade now and as editor, he has taken not only me, but thousands of other viewers from around the world on his travels.   Bart Yasso used to be the big time traveler in the running community, but I think that goes to Gary now, with Don Kern being in the conversation.

Since I have edited all of his shows, I will select some shows that will attest to his ubiquity.

Joan Benoit Samuelson To Kick-off Training for Gazelle Girl Half This Week
=============================================================================
From a Gazelle Girl Half Marathon news release:

"GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN Gazelle Sports has announced that Olympic medalist and two time Boston Marathon winner Joan Benoit Samuelson will travel to West Michigan this week for Gazelle Girl MeetUps on Friday, January 8 and Saturday, January 9 in Holland and Grand Rapids. Samuelson, who held the 25K American record (1:24:43) on the Fifth Third River Bank Run course from 1986 to 2012, will participate in a series of events with women planning to participate in the fourth annual Gazelle Girl Half Marathon & 5k on
Sunday, April 17.

        “I’m looking forward to my return to West Michigan to kick off training for the Gazelle Girl Half Marathon & 5k,” says Joan Benoit Samuelson. “When the women’s marathon was first introduced as an Olympic sport in 1984, I had the opportunity to take home a gold medal on behalf of my country. All-women events like the Gazelle Girl Half Marathon & 5k provide opportunities for women everywhere to get involved and take home their personal ‘gold’ in terms of better health, a personal record or doing something they didn’t feel was possible!”

        "On January 8, women are invited to the Haworth Inn & Conference Center in downtown Holland where Samuelson will share stories and answer questions. Afterward, women are invited to rejoin Samuelson at Gazelle SportsHolland for autographs and refreshments provided by Nike. On January 9, women can join Samuelson at the new Mary Free Bed YMCA at 8a for a 25 mile training run (various outside routes available), followed by a Q&A session and refreshments with Samuelson in the YMCA Community Room.

        "Given Samuelson’s connection to women and sports, along with her former longstanding
25K American record, Gazelle Sports is also announcing that the Gazelle Girl Half Marathon & 5k and the Fifth Third River Bank Run will partner for the second consecutive year on a dual finisher medal for women who complete both the Gazelle Girl Half Marathon on Sunday, April 17 and the Fifth Third River Bank Run 25K on Saturday, May 14. In addition, the two events will introduce for the first time in 2016 a dual finisher gift (yet to be determined) for those women who complete the Gazelle Girl 5k and the Fifth Third 5k. Women will be awarded their dual finisher gifts from the Gazelle Girl Half Marathon & 5k tent near the Fifth Third River Bank Run finish line on Saturday, May 14.

Mr. Ubiquitous Reports: New Years Eve in New York City (Dec. 30, 2015 - Jan. 1, 2016)
======================================================================================
Gary Morgan, aka Mr. Ubiquitous, reports:

Wednesday December 30th
        Danie and I left Michigan around noon for our ten hour drive to New York City.  It was the usual I-75 to I-80 all the way to New York, crossing the George Washington Bridge into the city. It's approximately 625 miles. With low traffic volume and just a little rain during the last 100 miles it was a smooth ride. Didn't even have to wait at the bridge which I've done in the past. We drive to Midtown Manhattan, parked the car in an underground garage, then walked seven blocks in the rain to the West Side YMCA. We checked in by 11 pm and called it a night. We had to rest up for the Midnight New Years Eve 4 mile run around Central Park.

Thursday December 31
        New York City's big day for the year is here:  New Years Eve. Danie and I get up and out the door by 9:30 am to start our exploration of the city for the day. First, though, Danie checks her phone to sign up for the New Years Eve race. It was sold out. I've done this race 10 times and it has never sold out. There's always a first time. I got on the phone and sent a couple of emails to some friends at the New York Road Runners Club. I was able to get us registered at the nice price of $65 apiece. Danie couldn't believe it was that much. I told her this is New York and it cost money to do things. We went to the AOL Time Warner building at Columbus Circle where we checked out the statues and Christmas decorations inside the building. From there we walked over to Times Square and saw how the Square was all set up for the big ball drop that night. Times Square is an electronic billboard show you can't forget. Three or four stages were setup in the Square along with all the barricades that keep people in them during the ball drop. Crazy thing was that people were already going into the barricaded area and it was only 11 am. Once you go inside the barricades you can't leave. If you do leave you can't go back in. This is what twenty year olds do. I'd seen all this before, but Danie couldn't believe what she was seeing. This is New York.  From here we went to Rockefeller Center and checked out the Christmas tree along with all the other decorations around the Center. On our way there, we saw all of Fifth Avenue decorated for Christmas. Across the street from Rockefeller Center is Saks Fifth avenue which was totally decked out with Christmas decorations from the store front windows to inside the store. Danie was taking pictures of everything. Right next door was St Patrick's Cathedral and we went in and checked it out as a New Years Mass was finishing. St. Patrick's is a beautiful church inside. As we walked down 5th avenue, we stopped at the Trump Tower and Tiffany's. Both are impressive places. Right in the middle of Fifth Avenue and 58th street, hanging 25 feet over the road, is a huge Swarovski star. At night it's a sight to behold. From there we got a late lunch at Burger Heaven. It was a good burger but it wasn't heaven. Finally, back to the West Side YMCA for an afternoon nap so we could stay up most of the night. The Y is a hotel above all the gym and swimming floors.

                At 6 pm we went over to the new New York Road Runners annex station where you can pick up your bib and shirt before races. It's on the West side of town now, on Columbus between 74th and 75th. This replaced their original building at East 89th street and Central Park East. I hear they are going to sell that building. That's kind of sad since that's where a lot of things started for the New York Road Runners in the 1970's and 1980's. I picked up a lot of bib's and shirts for races there over the years. We stopped at the Dive 75 bar and had a drink, a unique place in New York. Then we stopped at an Italian restaurant for a light dinner. Great pasta at Pomadore on Columbus at 70th. Back to the YMCA for another hour before going to Central Park at 10 pm. Staying here was great because we only had a 10 block walk over the race site at the 72nd Street traverse in the middle of Central Park. The race wasn't until midnight so there was plenty of entertainment on the band shell there. Music and dancers, along with an announcer, kept things moving. There was a resolution board that Danie and I signed. We checked out the face painting and start- finish line where we took pictures. The Start-Finish line is in the same place because the race circles the park and goes to the east side down to the 102nd Street traverse and comes back on the West side. At 11:40 pm runners started lining up in their corrals. Since Danie was planning on 7 minute miles she was near the front. I decide not to run and just film the race since my left foot was hurting. I enjoy watching an event like this and filming it. At 11:55 pm everyone was lined up. It was a perfect night to run with no wind and a temperature of 43 degrees. The countdown began and with 10 seconds left everyone joined in. At midnight the race started and the fireworks went off, too. For 15 minutes runners crossed the start line and fireworks were going. What a way to start the year! The men's winner came in at 18:30 and the women's finisher came in around 21:09. Danie came in around 29:00. I met her past the post race bagel and apple station and we took some more pictures of the celebration area. Then we headed back to the hotel As we walked by the Tavern on the Green, we saw a party going on there. It's nice to see that it is operating as a restaurant again after closing due to bankruptcy. Got back to the hotel at 1:30 am and called it a night after starting the New Year the best way possible with a run in Central Park.

Friday January 1st
        A New Year has begun. By 11 am were on the road to see my good friend James O'Brien, New York Athletic Club (NYAC) communications director, at the northern tip of Manhattan. We met, had lunch, and checked out his apartment. On the street from his place you can see the Palisades in New Jersey across the Hudson River along with the George Washington bridge. He told us to check out the Cloisters a half mile up the road, which we did. I've been to New York City and the area over 100 times and I didn't know this was here. I always try to see new things wherever I go.

        The Cloisters is a medieval castle, reconstructed in 1935-1939, with medieval art inside. The castle was built from other castles in Europe with materials which were brought here. This site was originally Fort Tyron during the Revolutionary War, 1776. Some beautiful gardens are there along with a great walkway and views of the Hudson River. The Museum was closed. It's closed three days a year: Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years. Not everything was closed; a restaurant on the grounds was open. We had a beer to celebrate the New Year. This is an awesome place and if you're in the northern part of New York City it's worth a visit. We started our drive home and we drove over the Henry Hudson bridge that connects northern  Manhattan to the Bronx. We drove up through Yonkers where there's one of the oldest marathons in the country, to the Tappan Zee Bridge into New Jersey which is some wild bear country and it looks it. Back to I-80 all the way back to Michigan.

        It was a great New Years trip.

        There's no place Like New York, and no one does it like New York.

        Gary Morgan
        Mr Ubiquitous

Race Report:  Ann Arbor Turkey Trot Gives Thanks, by Tracey Cohen
==============================================================================
        DEXTER (11/14/15) -- The hills rolled especially high for 208 of 900-plus runners who took on the Ann Arbor Turkey Trot’s “Iron Turkey,” competing in both the 5K and 10K races.
“I like the challenge of running both,” said Cortney Ophoff, whose strategy was to run the 5K as fast as possible, resulting in a 25:36 personal record, then run the 10K more casually.
        His son Calvin, 9, ran the Kids Mile.
        “I liked all the nice scenery,” Calvin beamed. “I like how running makes my body feel.”
        In light of the terrorist attacks hours earlier in Paris, race director Andrea Highfield expressed thanks to U.S. soldiers.
        After The Star-Spangled Banner sounded, the races began on a Hudson Mills Metropark morning drenched in sunshine.
        Matthew Melvin (15:28) and Jennifer Blindert (18:43) were the men’s and women’s 5K winners. Mike Katsefaras (33:10) and Lindsay White (38:50) claimed the 10K.
        Katsefaras and Blindert, with combined times of 48:48 and 58:08, ruled the Iron Turkey roost.
