Running Times Features Desi Linden on the Cover of Last Issue - Jan./Feb. 2016
===================================================================================
        "Desiree Linden Trains in Rochester Hills, Michigan for the Olympic Marathon Trials" reads the cutline with stunning grayscale photo of Desi by David W. Johnson. The article by Michael Heald reports on Desi's comeback from the injury which forced her to drop out of the Olympic marathon in London. Desi will complete for one of three spots at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Marathon in Los Angeles, February 13.

        Running Times announced in December that the January/February 2016 issue would be the last one. No online link to the article is available.

From the Labor Day Bridge Run Website:
        "In the past, only those who participated in a Pure Michigan FITness Series event were eligible to enter the Mackinac Bridge Labor Day Run. This is no longer the case.

        "The Mackinac Bridge Labor Day Run is a non-competitive run of about 4.3 miles over the Mackinac Bridge, taking place before the annual Bridge Walk. It’s organized by the Governor’s Office, Michigan Fitness Foundation, and Mackinac Bridge Authority. This is not a timed event and the course is not certified for distance. The Mackinac Bridge Labor Day Run is limited to 600 participants.

Mr. Ubiquitous Reports: Race Directors Challenge at Disney (Jan. 7-10, 2016)
======================================================================================
Gary Morgan, aka Mr. Ubiquitous, reports:

Thursday January 7
        Early morning flight from Detroit to Tampa. Rented a car and drove the 60 miles over to Orlando and checked into my hotel. I came here to attend the Race Directors Challenge at Disney. Put together by Boston Marathon race director, Dave McGillivray, the Challenge  was a race directors conference with the Disney Half Marathon as the challenge. That afternoon I drove out to the Orlando airport and picked up Doug Thurston, race director for the Big Sur Marathon. We went to the Epcot Conference Center for a reception of race directors around the country. After the reception there was a discussion on stage with the six World Marathon Major directors on the "S"tate of the Sport. The World Marathon Majors consist of New York, Boston, Chicago, London, Berlin, and Tokyo. Their biggest concerns  are corruption and doping in the running world. Women's marathon world record holder,  Paula Radcliff was there. What a great way to meet other race directors and share ideas with them. When this was over everyone went their own way and called it a night.

Friday January 8
        Woke up to a heavy rain storm. I went over to the workout room at the hotel and did a 45 minute jog on the treadmill, then went over to the Disney races finish line area. Those of us who are race directors were given a tour of the finish line area and all the things behind the Disney race. Jon Hughes is the race director who helped start the Disney races 23 years ago. Jon gave us his insights of what happens here at Disney. The entertainment director of the races told us how he and his staff put all the entertainment acts along the course on race days. It's amazing how this race originally started with a just a marathon. Now it's a colossal event. I race-walked the marathon in 1999 and won the race walk division. There were around 10,000 runners when it only was a marathon. I ran the half in 2010, when only the half and marathon were held. Now it's a four day event with four events and a kids run. The 5K is on Thursday, the 10k on Friday, the half marathon on Saturday and the marathon on Sunday. Plus 6,000 kids run on Saturday, 100 meters up to a mile in different age groups at the Wide World of Sports complex. This year 26,000 runners were in the half, 26,000 in the full marathon, 10,000 in the 5K and 10,000 in the 10K. 7,500 runners do the Dopey Challenge which is all four races, and 3,000 do the Goofy Challenge which is the half and full. Many runners are doing multiple races, yet there are still almost 70,000 runners for the weekend and almost 100,000 medals are given out. after all these figures were given out we walked over to the finish line and we were shown how  the finish line banner is changed every day for each race. All races finish here; the 5K and 10K races start at a different place than the half and full. All the races start at 5:30 am and are run in the dark to start. Plus, the each race is usually finished by the time the park opens, so it doesn't affect attendance at the park. This is a well-oiled money-making machine. All of these races are very expensive yet they fill up in a matter of days. Plus, Run Disney has nine other race weekends-- three others in Orlando, four more at Disneyland in California and one other on their Bahaman island. 250,000 runners participate in these yearly. It's an amazing, magical story that started with one marathon 23 years ago.
        From there I went over to the expo with my fellow race directors and picked up our bibs and shirts. The expo was at Disneys Wide World of Sports complex. The expo and bib pickup were at the two field houses on the complex. Lots of Vendors selling stuff pay for the expo space at $5,000 a booth. The complex is amazing like everything at Disney. The  baseball stadium is used by the Atlanta Braves as their spring training home. There are 220 acres of baseball and soccer fields along with a track where elite athletes train. The track hosts a few youth track meets during the year and lots of tournaments are held on these fields every year. the Wild World of Sports complex is another money-making machine. I dropped everyone else off at the Animal Kingdom Lodge and headed back to my hotel off-site. It's a little cheaper than staying anywhere on Disney property. Driving around the Disney complex is unbelievable; I notice how much property Disney has. I heard it was around 50,000 acres. Get back to my hotel to rest up before the evening get-together. That evening we all met at Epcot. All the race directors and special invited guest were there for a reception and dinner at the American Adventure Pavilion. What a fabulous building-- a Colonial replica building. Dinner and entertainment were great. Characters and musicians do skits and play music from the colonial era. When that was over, we went outside and watched a phenomenal fireworks display over a lake within Epcot. What a magical way to finish the day.

Saturday January 9
        Up super-early, like 2:15 am, to get ready to run the Disney Half Marathon. Out the door at 3 am and drove over to Animal Kingdom Lodge to meet all the rest of the Race Directors so we could take a bus directly to the start line. We were at the start line by 4:15 am. It was foggy, humid, and a nice temperature for a race morning.  Runners were coming in from everywhere as there were 16 corrals. Those of us who are race directors got to be near the front as we were starting in corral B. There were lights everywhere since it was dark that early in the morning. Lots of pre-race music and announcing, along with Disney characters coming on stage, encouraged the runners. The start came at 5:30 am  and fireworks shot as runners headed out on the course. One minute later Corral B, which I was in, started and we, headed out on the course too. Surprisingly, I could see fairly well, with just an occasional light from a generator so I didn't trip on the pavement. Every half mile there was some kind of entertainment-- a high school band, Disney character or Disney scene. With the Disney stuff runners would stop and take pictures. We were on road ways for a few miles then we started running through the parks. The first one was the adventure western theme park. Can't remember the exact name of it. Soon we were running through the Magic Kingdom at the halfway point and all of a sudden the castle is lit up in front of all the runners. We run through it and after we came out there wa- a picture taking spot. Lots of runners stopped there to take pictures. We finished running through the Magic Kingdom and ran by the golf course where Disney golfers were trying to get their golf ball back from an alligator. That was funny. We ran on roadway until the last mile as we entered Epcot. Ran just a little bit of Epcot then headed for the finish line 300 meters away. There were lots of spectators, music and announcers.  What a riot to finish this race. That's why it's called the Disney Experience. After I get my medal,  I head over to the VIP tent to meet with the other race directors. Get some orange juice and slap some high fives with the directors in the tent. Get some dry clothes on and watch lots of runners come across the finish line with a big smile. That's what this race is all about, enjoying Disney and the moment.

        I get the 10 am bus back to Animal Kingdom with the race directors. As soon as we get back there I get on another bus to take a tour with the race directors of the Expo and Wide World of Sports.  We met with the Expo director and her assistant. They took us through the bib pickup which was in one field house and shirt pickup was in another. The shirt pickup area was where the expo was being held. Over 70,000 shirts and bibs are distributed for the weekend races. We saw the kids races which are on the sports grounds. Races for kids are from 100 meter races up to a mile. All the different distances are all set up for the races. 6,000 kids pay $25 to run; they get a t- shirt and a rubber medal. Dave McGillivray couldn't believe they could get that many kids to pay that much money. We both have kids races and we have to give away race entries or sell them at low cost and still don't get very few kids. It's Disney and Magical. As we go through the expo the expo director gives us crazy numbers on merchandise sales. Plus, vendors all have to comply with Disney rules or are asked to leave and not come back next year. It is an amazing operation and they do it 8 times a year between here and California. Finally we head back to Animal Kingdom. I have some time so I check out this fantastic lodge. It reminds me of Yellowstone Lodge, Only Yellowstone is all wood; this lodge is a little bit of every material. Plus, African animals wander in a field behind the hotel. No predators just grass eaters like zebras, giraffes, gazelles, warthogs and other animals whose names I don't know. It was pretty cool to see. Disney tries to make it an African experience and they do an excellent job of it. I'm whipped and drive back to my hotel. Clean up, turn on the TV, and stay there until Sunday morning.

Sunday, January 10th
        Got up around 6 am and get ready to go watch the marathoners finish. I get to the Disney complex at 7 am and it took me an hour driving around detours to get to the finish line to see runners finish. I got there in time to see the first woman finish and they blew confetti in the air as she finished. That was cool to see. Saw some of the other race directors watching. We all cheered Dave McGillivray as he finished the marathon and it completed the Dopey Challenge for him. I finally headed out and drove to Tampa. Got there at noon and didn't fly home until 7 pm. The flight delay was due to a storm here in Michigan. Got home at Midnight to no power at my house. Slept in my car and headed to yoga the next day. That's my crazy life and I choose it. It never gets dull.

        Keep living and make it Magical,

        Gary Morgan

At the Races:  Ann Arbor Turkey Trot Gives Thanks, by Tracey Cohen
==============================================================================
        DEXTER (11/14/15) -- The hills rolled especially high for 208 of 900-plus runners who took on the Ann Arbor Turkey Trot’s “Iron Turkey,” competing in both the 5K and 10K races.
“I like the challenge of running both,” said Cortney Ophoff, whose strategy was to run the 5K as fast as possible, resulting in a 25:36 personal record, then run the 10K more casually.
        His son Calvin, 9, ran the Kids Mile.
        “I liked all the nice scenery,” Calvin beamed. “I like how running makes my body feel.”
        In light of the terrorist attacks hours earlier in Paris, race director Andrea Highfield expressed thanks to U.S. soldiers.
        After The Star-Spangled Banner sounded, the races began on a Hudson Mills Metropark morning drenched in sunshine.
        Matthew Melvin (15:28) and Jennifer Blindert (18:43) were the men’s and women’s 5K winners. Mike Katsefaras (33:10) and Lindsay White (38:50) claimed the 10K.
        Katsefaras and Blindert, with combined times of 48:48 and 58:08, ruled the Iron Turkey roost.
