Mr. Ubiquitous Reports on the Chevron Houston Marathon - Michigan Runner TV/Running Network TV
======================================================================================
Gary Morgan, Mr. Ubiquitous, has started off the year as he finished last year, on the go. Thus far, he has reported from New York City Midnight Run, the  Walt Disney Half Marathon, The North American International Auto Show and this week, the Chevron Houston Marathon. The video primarily addresses some running adventures that you may want to know about.  He interviews representatives from the Bozeman Marathon, Kathy Loper Events, H.E.B. Alamo Half Marathon, All Guard National  Guard Marathon, Big Sur International Marathon, Texas Independence Relay and the Beaches to Bay Relay Marathon.

Of particular interest was the interview with Kathy Loper. Kathy spent some time in Michigan and worked with the Michigan Runner on a trip that Jennie McCafferty took to run the Great Wall of China.  We did three shows of the China trip

Mr. Ubiquitous Reports: Detroit Auto Show, Houston Marathon - Jan. 11-18, 2016
======================================================================================
Gary Morgan, aka Mr. Ubiquitous, reports:

Hello All,

    It's been another busy week.

Monday- Tuesday January 11-12
    After getting my head together after a crazy day of travel coming home from Orlando I was in Detroit at the North American International Auto Show at Cobo Center. I was there for the industry preview covering it for Michigan Runner and Great Lakes Sports Publications. Monday and Tuesday were Industry preview days. People involved in the automotive industry, along with the media, were invited to check out the Auto Show before the public came. All the automotive companies were there showcasing all of their new vehicles. Over 700 vehicles were on display. I got there as Ford was unveiling their new car, the Liquid Blue GT Raptor, along with the new Fusion race car. It was exciting to see a new vehicle being shown to the world at this show. There were lots of video screens at all the automotive companies' show spots. Cars, people, and nature scenes were showing on the screens. Chrysler had an awesome show spot with music, lights and video screens. Every few minutes something else would come on. I really enjoyed seeing the Borg Warner Trophy, the Indy 500 trophy given out to the winner of the race every year. This years 2015 winning car was right next to it. 2016 will be the 100th running of the Indy 500. It's going to be an exciting day for the race.
    Suppilers had exhibits, too-- showing what they contribute to cars. You'd be surprised what goes into making a car nowadays. I checked in at the Michelin Media center. Michelin was the sponsor of the media center. It was huge. With thousands of journalists from around the globe it needed to be big. The media center took up the entire new Ball Room built at Cobo Center. I was there two days covering the industry preview. With so many vehicles and companies to cover it took both days. Lots of awards were given out, along with unveiling new vehicles that the public had never seen before. As I was leaving Tuesday night, I felt proud of Detroit for putting together a phenomenal Auto Show that the rest of the world will be happy to see.

Friday, January 15
    Hopped on a plane in the afternoon to Houston, Texas with Danie Matusik. We were going there to run the Houston Marathon. Three hours later we were in Houston and as we walked through the Delta Terminal we went by the Houston Cow in a space suit statue. What a great picture taking opportunity. We rented a car and drove to downtown Houston. The Bush airport is 20 miles from downtown. Since I've been here many times and Danie hasn't. I gave her a short nighttime tour. A basketball game was being held at the Toyota Center which is next door to the Brown Convention Center qhere all the marathon activities would go on.
    We walked over to the Hard Rock Cafe near thye museum area and had dinner. I always like going to Hard Rock cafes to see the former stars memorabilia. MTV videos of David Bowie kept playing since he just passed away a few days ago. We headed for our hotel after that and called it a day.

Saturday  January 16
    Went to the George Brown (official Name) Convention Center. I picked up my Media Credentials and we went to the expo. As I walk into the expo I run into some people with Michigan roots I haven't seen in years. I saw Kathy Loper who owns a running travel company. I took one of her trips to Kilimanjaro in 2005. What a great trip to the Serengeti to see the african animals, run a marathon and climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. She's still taking people on wild trips around the globe. You'll have a great time if you go on one of Kathy Loper's tours.
    The race directors of the Texas Independence Relay, a 200 mile relay from Goldid to San Jancinto Monument are a husband and wife from Michigan. I've interviewed them before at other races in Texas. I also interviewed the race director from the Beach to Bay Relay in Corpus Christi. He's been race director for 25 years. I ran in his race back in 2007 when I was directing a series of races for Avon. I ran a 4.4 mile first leg for a team on the beach. What a great event it was and still is. It's Americas largest relay with over 2200 teams with six runners per team. If you ever get a chance, go run it. In San Antonio, there's a half marathon that goes through Sam Houston military base and finishes in the Alamo Dome. Sounds like another great race. I interviewed another race compny that has a series of races over bridges in the state and also interviewed the National Guard running team. This is a great expo with races to go to, running trip companys, giveaways, great picture-taking opportunities and Skechers mercandise sales, the official shoe of the Chevron Houston Marathon. This is definetly a peoples' race and expo.
    That evening we went to the Skechers reception at the Grove Resturant right in front of the Brown Convention Center. Met with Houston Marathon Director Brant Kotch, along with other race directors and race staff. It was a nice reception and it's great way to meet people in the running community.

Sunday  January 17
    Usual early morning routine-- up at 4:30 am and out the door. Got to downtown Houston at 5:00 am and parked close to the finish line. Hung out in the car until 6:00 am and walked over to the basement of the convention center. This is where runners drop off their bags, use the porta johns, and stay warm until the race starts. This is a huge convention center so the basement is plenty big for 29,000 half and full marathoners. Danie left the area at 6:30 am so she could be at her start corral by 6:40 am. It wasn't a long way but lots of runners making their way to the start 6 blocks away took time. I left at 6:40 am and had to be at my corral by 6:50 am. It was a cool morning in Houston, hovering around 40 degrees. Got in my corral and waited for the start. Someone sang the National Anthem and then the gun fired at 7:00 am. Corral A went then Corral B. It took me around eleven minutes to hit the start. I hiked this marathon since I have a slightly injured left foot. I did a six hour pace which became a great walking tour of Houston. Plus, this is the second time I've done it. Back in 2012 I ran this marathon. Houston is a big city so there are lots of wide roads to run on. It's the usual urban marathon with a fair number of spectators along the way. I really liked the section through Rice University which had lots of trees and university buildings along with the stadium. The course went through neighborhoods with large homes. Thats usual in Texas.

    The last few miles were along Bayou Park just before we entered the city center the last 1.2 miles. Miles and kilometers were marked on the course. With lots of foreign runners, it's good to have kilometer signs. As I hiked it in the last mile through the city, I realized how diverse and unique Houston is. With all the spectators and volunteers handing out Gatorade along with water, plus the music stations, I saw a city that people love to be a part of and love this marathon. In it's 43rd year, it's an iconic part of this town. As I crossed the finish line someone yelled Keep going Mr Ubiquitous. It was on my bib. I got my medal, then  I went into basement of the convention center, picked up my finisher shirt and mug. Then got my bag and had a little bit of the breakfast they were still serving to runners that hiked the marathon in 6 hours like me. Danie met me and we took pictures of a marathon sign together.

    Finally back at the car, we dropped off our bags and checked out the finish area. Thought I might get a beer but it was all closed up. I probably didn't need one. Danie had a great race and wanted to go sight seeing since she had never been to Texas. She wanted to see a Texas Long Horn. I told her they are at least 30 miles away on ranches outside of the city, so we went to San Jacinto Monument Battlefield State Park 20 miles south of the city.
    I had gone to the Monument last month so I knew where it was. As we drove into the Park the Monument's presence is spectacular. At 570 feet tall, it's 15 feet higher than the Washington Monument. It represents how important the battle of San Jacinto was to America. This country almost doubled its size due to the Texans winning that batlle in 1836. We get to the Monument and go inside. Get our $4 ticket for the 490 foot elevator ride to the observation point on top of the monument. The view is spectacular as we could see Houston 20 miles away along with the entire shipping channel all along the park. Within the park is the USS Texas Battleship, built in 1912. We came down and checked out the history of the battle in the little museum and on the outside museum walls. Then we drove around the park and saw a flock of pink flamingos hanging out in the marsh. "Pink flamingos in Texas"-- who would have ever thought. Drove by the shipping channel and battleship, took a few more pictures and headed back to town. We found a really cool orignal barbecue spot for dinner-- the Goode's Armadillo Palace. It was in a barn-like structure; inside there were just wooden chairs and tables. The kitchen was filled with servers and cooks. We stood in line, ordered, and were served at the end of the line. It was incredibly delicious. Danie had wanted to come here since she saw the Armidillo during the race. I highly recommend coming here to eat when you visit Houston. We went back to the hotel and fell asleep imediately. What a day in Houston! It was great.

Monday January 18
    Got up early, out the door, drove to the airport and caught the Delta flight back to Detroit. What a weekend in Houston! I highly recommend running the Houston Marathon or any race in Texas because Texans are friendly and fun people to be around. There are lots of events and places to see in the Lone Star state so get packing and enjoy this wonderful place.

    • Rosa Park's Nat'l Victory Celebration
    • A Visit to Robben Island, South Africa, Nelson Mandela Gateway
    • Ben Davis-Michigan Golf Hall of Fame

    Martin Luther Day, like many holidays, allows all of us a time for reflection. For GLSP, it reminds us of three shows we have done over the years. While these contributions are modest, hopefully, when added to others, they will become a  crescendo.

Rosa Parks' National Victory Celebration
    We were honored to bring our viewers the Rosa Parks National
Victory Celebration. Our coverage took place at the Charles H. Wright Museum of
African American History and Greater Grace Temple.
    Viewers will be able to witness the love and impact she had on people. Those who
bid farewell to Rosa Parks included, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Jesse Jackson, Mike
Flanagan, John Conyers, Dale Kildee, Al Sharpton, Dick Gregory, Jennifer Granholm, Dan Mulhern, Ed Bradley, Tommy Hearns, Mayor Kilpatrick, Freman Hendrix, William Ford, Louis Farakhan and countless friends, family and students.

Ben Davis - Michigan's First Minority Golf Professional
    Erellon Ben Davis was born February 19, 1912 in Pensacola, FL to Ellis and Belle Davis. He was a talented golfer as a youth; however there were few opportunities in 1920's Florida for African-Americans in golf. His instructor, golf pro Toney Penna, encouraged him to leave Florida for better opportunities up north. Davis moved to Detroit in 1925 and graduated from Northern High School in Detroit. He began his professional golf career in 1936 at the Pine Crest Driving Range in Ferndale, MI. He began teaching golf at Rackham Golf Course in Huntington Woods, MI in 1952 where he would become a Class A Head Professional.

Races and Places, by Art McCafferty
============================================================================
    A few years back, we began to produce shows entitled, Races and Places.  We did this as a wrap up feature of our video coverage on major race coverage.  As you know, a running event, can feature multiple events and sometimes a potential participant my want to look the entire event over before they decide to make plans for when they want to run this race.
    Running a new  race is usually a great experience.  In the early days of MR we used to get our information on races from our writers.  We sill supply that information for our readers, but in the digital days of running, we also supply video as well.  We usually keep these shows to roughly four minutes.  Essentially, we select a composition from our composer Jamie Fallon and select the video to complement it.
    So..... if you want to take a quick peek, four minutes or less, just click on one of these shows for a peak running experience

Race Report:  At the Races:  Ann Arbor Turkey Trot Gives Thanks, by Tracey Cohen
==============================================================================
    ANN ARBOR (11/26/15) – Nick Katsefaras and Annie Norah-Beveridge raced to victories, but Kyle Feliks was gifted two pumpkin pies before even starting the 10th annual Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot 5K.
    “It was terrible,” said Feliks about his decision to run the distance while carrying two pies.
    Katsefaras finished in 15:29, Norah-Beveridge in 18:59 and Feliks in 25:26. “It was the hardest event I’ve ever run,” Feliks said.
    Organizers, emphasizing family, fun, tradition and philanthropy, worked to ensure every trotter felt happy and appreciated, no matter their pace and place.
    Among more than 2,000 entrants on a wet, mild Thanksgiving morning was Roger Bourne, back for his 10th straight year and winner of the largest group award. “There are 28 of us,” said Bourne, proud to have so many friends and family members join him.
Martin and Lisa Schumacher drove from Chicago to establish a new family tradition.
    “It’s the attention to detail and care put into it,” Lisa said about what makes the race special.
    “I loved the hilly, challenging course,” Martin said.
