Dathan Ritzenhein, Desi Linden To Run Relay in Dallas Marathon, Dec. 13
Dallas Marathon News Release:

"Some of American running’s biggest names are heading to Dallas on Dec. 13 for a new relay event in conjunction with the Dallas Marathon.

The Duo to Rio Relay will feature some notable stars. The 10 elite runners confirmed for the relay include Meb Keflezighi, Desiree Linden, Deena Kastor, Dathan Ritzenhein, Molly Huddle, Abdi Abdirahman, Annie Bersagel, Luke Puskedra, Jared Ward and Becky Wade.

That’s five males and five females. The relay is set up for a male to run 13.1 miles and hand off to a female to run the second half. Pairings will be announced on Dec. 11.

All 10 athletes are qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon on Feb. 13 in Los Angeles, or about nine weeks after the Duo to Rio Relay, and everybody but Huddle is expected to race in the Trials. While other elite runners are racing half marathons this month—Shalane Flanagan, Amy Hastings Cragg and Kara Goucher will be at Rock ‘n’ Roll San Antonio this weekend—these runners are finding the Duo to Rio Relay to be a well-timed 13.1-mile tune-up with a unique and enjoyable format. There’s no prize money at stake.

“It will probably be a variety of different approaches among the field,” Wade told USA Today. “Maybe some people who are trying to get in a solid tempo run, some people who don’t want to take it too intensely. Some who will give a half-marathon effort.”

The relay teams will run the marathon course, which is looped in certain areas. That will allow participants to pass the elites multiple times."

Erin O'Mara Sets New "Beer Mile" World Record
The folks at began the "Beer Mile" competition in 2014 and a new "Beer Mile" at Flat Rock Speedway in Michigan joined the fun, November 14, 2015. The "Beer Mile" competition tracks times and records, and held a "World Championship" in Austin, Texas on December 1.

What's a "Beer Mile?"  Begin by drinking a 12 oz beer, run a lap, repeat three times for a total of four laps.

At the second Flo Track Beer Mile World Championships, Michigan's own Erin O'Mara set a new beer mile world record with a 6:08, 18 seconds faster than runner-up Andrea Fisher and significantly faster than her Michigan Beer Mile time of 6:40.

Erin O'Mara's Record:

Mr. Ubiquitous Reports: Turkey Trot, Detroit (Nov. 19-26, 2015)
Gary Morgan, aka Mr. Ubiquitous, reports:

Busy two weeks around Thanksgiving:

Friday, November 19
Worked the Hob Nobble Gobble Parade Company fundraiser at Ford Field.  Dressed in a tux I was a ticket taker at the event. This is an awesome event and it showcases how great Detroit is.

Saturday November 20
Detroit River Front Conservancy Volunteer Orientation at the new Michigan Outdoor Adventure Center in Detroit on Atwater Street. I'm all ready to help make the Riverfront an even better place. The adventure is awesome and it just opened in July at the Old Globe Trading Center that was built in 1892. Ran the riverfront trail all the way to the new Gabriel Richard Park east of Belle Isle. Other than the old Uniroyal site it's all done. What a great path.

Wednesday November 25
I'm in Detroit at Cobo Hall setting up for the Turkey Trot. A huge production as 16,000 runners will go through here after the race. Food, water, and decorations are all over reminding runners of Thanksgiving and Christmas to come. That evening Danie Matusik and I walked around Campus Martius. The Christmas tree was phenomenal and there were lots of people ice skating at the rink. Further up Woodward all the stores had lights up and WDIV had their television booth setup. Everyone was ready for the big day.

Thursday November26
It's Thanksgiving Day in Detroit and I'm part of the Turkey Trot crew. Started at 5:00 am and helped set the Woodward section of the course with Ron Smergin and Larry O'Sullivan. Waited at the turnaround on Woodward in front of the Detroit Institute of Arts, which was the 2.5 mile mark.
After the last runner we then opened the course for the parade. It was awesome being at the turnaround since it was the start of the parade. I saw how they assembled the clowns, floats, and balloons.  Since it was a 50 degree day it was enjoyable being out there. As the last runner came by in the 10K we followed him to the 5K turn on Woodward. Then we followed them, picking up mile marker signs along the way. Finally, back to Cobo and saw all the happy runners. As they cleared out a few of us did cleanup and I was out of there by noon. That afternoon I met Danie and we went to a friend's house in Howell to celebrate Thanksgiving by eating turkey with our running friends.

What an awesome thanksgiving, running, watching the parade and eating turkey with friends. This is what we do in the "D". I'm thankful for all these things and plenty more. Happy thanksgiving.

Friday November 27
Met Doug Kurtis and the turkey trot gang in Plymouth. We went to get the 10 trucks at Cobo, took them to the Parade Company and emptied them out. Then took them back to Plymouth and the Turkey Trot duties were over. That evening I Went to the Howell Fantasy of Lights 5K race and volunteered with the Brighton Area Road Striders (BARS) running group. We were the course marshals for the race. This is always a nice race after Thanksgiving. After the race there's a parade. Great evening with mild temperatures and fast times. Five men ran under 16 minutes.  After the race we all went to Tomato Brothers and toasted a drink to the race and the holidays. Called it a night and drove home.
That's it for this week.

Next week, I'll have a story from the Space Coast Marathon and the USATF convention in Houston.

Keep on Running,

Gary Morgan
Mr Ubiquitous
