Mr. Ubiquitous Reports: Space Coast, Houston (November 28 - December 2, 2015)
======================================================================================
Gary Morgan, aka Mr. Ubiquitous, reports:

Saturday, November 28
        Early morning flight to Tampa, Florida. Rented a car and drove 125 miles to Cocoa, Florida for the Space Coast Marathon Expo. The Expo was being held at the local Radisson Hotel. The Expo was nice even though it was small; it features the space station at Cape Kennedy close by.  Lots of cool races in Florida during the winter were showcased here. These races include the Excalibur 10 miler, A1A Marathon, Daytona Half Marathon along with a collection of races put on by the Space Coast runners. After the Expo all the pacers had dinner. After dinner I walked along the beach and onto the historic pier here in Cocoa Beach, Florida. This is a big surfing and tourist destination. On the pier there were lots of pictures and descriptions of the history of this area. I walked back to my hotel and called it a night.

Sunday November 29.
        Up at 4:00 am and to the race site 10 miles away in Cocoa at 4:45 am. The half starts at 6:00 and the full marathon at 6:30 am. I get there for the pacer picture at the start. Then the half marathoners line up and take off as the shuttle takes off on the video screen at the start. Then all of us who are marathoners line up. The shuttle takes off and we're on our way six minutes after the first runner takes off. I was a pacer for the seven hour walkers. I had all day to walk the marathon. I've done this marathon three times before and it's one of the most scenic races I've ever done. The thirteen miles along the Indian River Causeway is phenomenal. The marathoners go one way and the half marathoners go the other way to the finish by a park where we all started.  For the next seven hours I had lots of scenery and great company to talk with. The finish area of this race is awesome-- at a park overlooking the bay. Pizza, beer, medals and a towel go to all finishers. What a great race! I highly recommend putting this on your bucket list.

        After the race I cleaned up at the hotel and caught up with a friend of mine south of Cocoa, right on Indian River. Mike McNess, former CEO of USATF, is now the city manager of Melbourne, Florida.  He took me for a boat ride with his wife on the Indian River. What a beautiful place this is. We went to dinner at the local marina and the entertainment duo were from Michigan. Lots of retirees from Michigan move to Florida. What a great day-- marathoning and visiting friends, Can't beat that combination.

Monday, November 30
        Another early start as I had to drive back to Tampa. I saw the sunrise and got on the road for the 125 mile drive back to the Tampa Airport. Got there by 10 am and flew out at 12 noon. As I got on the plane I was sad to leave but grateful I had the opportunity to run and catch up with a great friend. Life keeps moving fast. Ride the wave of life.

Tuesday December 1
        Back to Detroit Metro Airport to fly to Houston for the USATF convention. Going to Houston is kind of ironic for me since I went to my first USATF convention in Houston in 1985. I've been there a few times since for USATF Championships, USOC meetings and the 2012 Olympic Marathon trials. It was a night flight and I got there at 10 pm. Went to the hotel and called it a night.

Wednesday, December 2
        Up at a relatively early 7:00 am to get ready for the Youth Administration Workshop I was signed up for. The workshop started at 9:00 am but I had to register for the convention and pickup my SWAG, which was a back pack. Those are always useful. The Workshop was great as we talked about registration systems, putting on track meets and SafeSport signup. Two legends from the sport were guest speakers. Bershawn Batman Jackson, Olympic medalist in the 400 meter hurdles, talked about how he came from the projects in Miami to become an Olympic athlete. Going through Youth Athletics changed his life. That evening John Carlos, 1968 Olympic Bronze medalist, talked about his days of running and standing up for human rights on the podium in Mexico City. He gave a great speech. It was a good workshop and I learned a lot. Before the evening dinner speech I went for a run on the Buffalo Bayou trail. There is a great system of trails through a park just a half mile from downtown. This park has been a work-in-progress as every time I come to Houston there are always improvements to the park. When you come to Houston take time to explore this park and trail system.

Thursday December 2
        Busy day at the convention which was held at the Hyatt in Houston. Went to lots of meetings for a variety of things happening in USATF. That evening was the opening ceremony. CEO Max Siegel and President Stephanie Hightower gave opening remarks. Awards were given out and financials read and then it was time for the reception. Everyone mixed and mingled in the hotel for the evening. I soon called it a night.
I'll give you the rest of the story next week.

        Keep on Running and moving any way you can.

Gary Morgan
Mr Ubiquitous
