Milford Labor Day 30K is A - OK. By Art McCafferty

2006-2017   http://glsp.com/milford/

The Milford Labor Day 30K is an iconic Michigan Fall  Road Race. We have been doing videos on the race since 2005 and years before that I ran the race  with Mike Duff.  I remember it was a hot day  and it beat us up pretty bad. However, this year the temperature was mild, a sunny day was enjoyed by all, and everybody enjoyed the music and the post-race afternoon.

We have produced five shows for your viewing pleasure.  Enjoy.

Races and Places - Milford Labor Day 30K
Plymouth, Indiana & Its Famous Blueberry Stomp. By Art McCafferty
Once upon a time we published the Indiana Runner and, for about three years, we covered most of Indiana’s big time road races, the Blueberry Stomp, being one of them. When Gary Morgan dropped off his Blueberry Stomp video footage, it brought back memories of our coverage a couple of decades back. It is one of those bucket list runs featuring a variety of races, a parade and all the events surrounding it.

Whose Your Tiger?
I need a new Tiger.

Detroit Tiger fans will be celebrating sometime in the future, but this trading season has been an unmitigated loser. Justin Upton - gone; Alex Avila - gone; Justin Wilson - gone; J.D. Martinez (who tied a major league record with 4 home runs on Labor Day) - gone; and, the biggest loss of all: Justin Verlander - gone.

JV is a runner:  during spring training games in Lakeland, Florida, I'd watch JV run and run around Joker Marchant Stadium.

I first met Justin Verlander 11 years ago during the Tigers' off-season road show and he had been "my Tiger" ever since. Last Fall I was delighted to score a short interview with JV at the Fifth Third Bank 4 Star 4 Mile Run in Detroit:
Interview with Justin Verlander, Nov. 2016:

Justin Verlander's Good-bye Video:

JV won his first start with the Houston Astros last night; hope the Astros do well in the post-season.

As for my new Tiger, I'll pick a new one a few weeks into the 2018 season, maybe.

Mr. Ubiquitous Reports: Detroit Riverfront, Door County Wisconsin, Blueberry Stomp Festival Race,
      Aug. 31 - Sept. 4, 2017
Mr. Ubiquitous reports:

Busy Labor Day Weekend--

Thursday August 31
Went to the Detroit Riverfront and rode a bike along the riverfront as an Ambassador for The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy. I greeted people and handed them literature on the riverfront about future events for three hours in the middle of the day. The Riverwalk goes from the Coast Guard Station area to the West riverfront area just a mile north of the Ambassador Bridge. Lots of people were enjoying the riverfront for the afternoon. Lots of exciting things happen at the riverfront daily. Come out and see what is going on.

Friday September 1
Got on the road with Danie Matusik around 4:30 pm for our trip to Door County, Wisconsin. We experienced a fair amount of traffic for a holiday weekend yet we made it to Milwaukee in just a little over 6 hours and called it a night there. Going through Chicago wasn't too bad since it was after 8 pm and rush hour traffic was over. I've done this drive numerous times so it was like clock work. Rested up at a hotel for the evening.

Saturday September2
Back on the road by 9 am for the 200 mile drive up to and through Door County. We go by the "Welcome" sign and stop at the visitor center. We get maps and brochures on the county. I've heard about Door County and all the great things about it for over a decade, so I'm finally making the trip here. Door County is the peninsula in Wisconsin that goes into Lake Michigan. It starts just south of Sturgeon Bay which is a waterway that cuts through the peninsula. Sturgeon Bay was a major ship building port on the Great Lakes in the 1800's. We crossed over the bay/river on a bridge and started driving up the peninsula on the west side. The drive was beautiful as we went by small towns on the water, golf courses, big lodges and lots of restaurants. It was raining a little bit but we were dry driving. 50 miles up the peninsula we came to the end of it at a place called Northport where we caught the Ferry to Washington Island 7 miles away. The body of water between the peninsula and Washington Island is called Deaths Door, because so many boats sank here over the years. The currents here are wicked and have claimed boats and lives. That's why boats now go out to Lake Michigan and not across this channel. This is how Door County got its name. Death's Door became Door County. Door County was established in 1851. The ferry ride was a little rocky since it was raining and wind was blowing at a good clip. Seven  miles and 30 minutes later we were on Washington Island. Washington Island is approximately 6 miles long and 5 miles wide with 700 permanent residents. As soon as we drove off the ferry the rain went from a slow steady rain to a torrential downpour. We drove 2 miles straight to Nelsen's Hall and Bitters Pub. This is Wisconsin's oldest continuously operating bar, established in 1899. It serves Angostura Bitters which is 90  proof but is a stomach tonic. It was served during prohibition and the bar stayed open then. It's the worlds largest server of bitters. Danie and I drank a shot of it and got our Bitters Club card. Over 10,000 people become Bitters Club members every year.  This place was a riot. Since it was raining we stayed until dark and met lots of other tourists and semi-locals. We got the lowdown on this place and the island. Another cool thing folks do at this place is to put a tack and a dollar with a quarter wrapped up in it and toss it to stick on the ceiling. At 8 pm we called it a night and walked 500 feet to the Bread and Water bed and breakfast place where we stayed for the night. The owner of this place was a long distance kayaker and had kayaked all over the World. I told her I was from the Detroit area and she said JP McCarthy was a good friend of hers. Three of her kayaks were on display. After her story's we checked in and called it a night.

Sunday September 3
Slept until 8 am and then drank coffee looking out the deck and seeing the birds land around the place on a sunny morning after a day of rain. Got going and went to School House Beach. It was a rock beach on a beautiful bay. A couple of sailboats were in the bay. It was called School House Beach because a school was right on the beach there years ago. Then we went to mountain park lookout tower. It was a big hill with a tower on top. There were lot's of steps to climb yet the view of the Island and Lake Michigan was spectacular. We left there and drove by the Historic Island Dairy and Island Lavender Company Farm as we went back to the Washington Island town area. We bought snacks for lunch at the grocery store and a coffee next door at a cafe. The store didn't open until 9 and the cafe was filled at 8.  Island life moves slowly and most places close by 6 and don't open until 9.
We went to the Rock Island Ferry dock and caught the 10:30 am ferry to Rock Island. Rock Island is a state park and is a nature park with no cars or bikes. It is the furthest point for Door County and Wisconsin in Lake Michigan. The ferry boat took 49 passengers at a time. The first ferry was filled so we boarded the second one. It's a 1.5 mile ride across the channel which we made in 15 minutes. As soon as we got off we hiked 1.5 miles to the lighthouse. We got on a tour as soon as we got there. This is Wisconsin's oldest lighthouse and was built in 1836. The tour was great and we had to climb small steep steps to the top where the light shined out over the lake. This lighthouse was staffed until 1946 and now has an electronic signal which shines over the lake. The house is a museum and well worth going on the tour. Hiked around the house then hiked back to the ferry dock. One of the plaques showed a picture of "Le Griffon", a ship that sank in 1679 on it's maiden voyage. The ship was built by the French near Niagara Falls. When it sank it was filled with furs and supplies leaving Green Bay. To this day it hasn't been found. There's a picture of Le Griffon in the Detroit Library across from DIA.  We saw the boathouse and other buildings used by the Chester Thordarson, owner of the property before it was purchased by the state of Wisconsin. Thordarson was from Iceland and invented electrical equipment used today for transmission of electrical power. Many people camp on the island as we saw campers coming from the island when we were going. We took the ferry back to Washington Island and then got the ferry back to the mainland. Washington Island got it's name from ships that landed there in the 1800's at the time that President Washington had just passed away. After our 30 minute ferry ride back to the mainland, We started our trek down the east side of the peninsula. Stopped for lunch along the way and admired the water on the bay on a beautiful sunny day. For the next 6 hours we drove all the way to Mishuwauka, Indiana. Stayed there for the night after an exciting day of sightseeing in Door County.

Monday September 4
Up early for a 30 mile drive to Plymouth, Indiana for the 43rd Blueberry Stomp Festival 5k/15k run. Dani and I got registered and watched the kids 1 mile run. Then we lined up at 9 am for the race. I filmed the start then hopped in at the end and started my run at a slow pace. The first mile was right through downtown Plymouth, Indiana. People were getting ready for the parade as we ran by. The race headed out of town on some hilly roads then came back into the city. The parade was going on so we ran the opposite direction of the parade. People cheered us on as we came by. We finished in the local park where the Festival was being held. Danie won her age group and she got a festival blanket. Lots of water and Gatorade quenched everyone's thirst on a summer morning race.  We packed up and skipped the festival even though it's a big deal, the 51st annual event. We stopped and saw Danie's parents in Athens Michigan, then drove home from there. What an incredible weekend here on the Great Lakes. I highly recommend visiting Door County sometime. It's a fun-filled place with lots to do.

The Great Lakes are great times.
