New Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K Coming to Sault Ste Marie Michigan
======================================================================
Since we always enjoy our visits to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, we're pleased that the Sault Ste. Marie Chamber has announced the Sault Ste. Marie Chase, a new marathon, half marathon and 10K scheduled for September 25, 2010.

The Chase is a flat, out and back course running along the shores of the St. Mary’s River. It begins on the campus of Lake Superior State University, continues across the International Bridge, circles downtown along the Soo Locks and continues to follow the river front through residential areas to approximately 8 mile road. The finish line is in downtown Sault Ste. Marie at the corner of Ashmun and Portage Streets. The only ‘rise’ on the course falls at the beginning of the race on the International Bridge. The Bridge portion of the run is approximately 4.2 miles with two slight inclines – we cross the bridge, turn around prior to Canadian Customs and run back. The Half Marathon course starts and ends in the same location as the full, you just turn around earlier in the race. The 10K course will also start at the University and run across the bridge.

We gave our chief photographer, Carter Sherline from Frog Prince Studios, a couple of Flip video cameras and told him to catch some of the action at this year's Run Barbados http://www.runbarbados.org/ We neglected to tell Carter to stay away from the Mount Gay Rum until the taping was done. Alas, we did not, so you will some shaky video from time to time, but aside from that, Carter treats the viewer to some cricket, ocean swimming, a visit to the Mount Gay Rum company, a view of the island and the start of the three races on Barbados. Gatorade National Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year: Megan Goethals

DETROIT, Feb. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- In its 25th year of honoring the nation's best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with ESPN RISE, today announced Megan Goethals of Rochester High School (Rochester Hills, Mich.) as its 2009-10 Gatorade National Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the racecourse, distinguishes Goethals as the nation's best high school girls cross country runner. A national advisory panel comprised of sportswriters and sport-specific experts from around the country helped select Goethals from more than 198,000 high school girls cross country runners nationwide. Goethals is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade Female High School Athlete of the Year award, to be presented at a special afternoon ceremony prior to The ESPY Awards in July.

The two-time Gatorade Michigan Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year, Goethals completed an unbeaten season by winning the national Foot Locker Cross Country Championships with a time of 17:06.9, during which she out-leaned junior and three-time Gatorade Texas Runner of the Year Chelsey Sveinnson at the tape to produce the most exciting finish in the event's 31-year history. The 5-foot-8 senior also shattered her own state meet course record by 16 seconds in 16:54.8, repeating as Division 1 champion despite a stiff headwind. Goethals, who owns six course records in the state of Michigan, added regular-season victories at the Spartan Invitational, the West Bloomfield Invitational, and the Foot Locker Midwest Regional Championships in 2009.

Goethals has maintained a 3.66 GPA in the classroom. A member of the National Honor Society, she has volunteered on behalf of Meals on Wheels as well as US Youth Soccer TOPSoccer, a community-based training and team placement program for young athletes with disabilities.

"Goethals backed up her national title by dominating Michigan all fall and winning decisively at the Foot Locker Midwest Regional," said Steve Underwood, Senior Editor for ESPN RISE/DyeStat.com. "Her state meet victory—a 16:54.8 in the 5K that beat a great Division 1 field by a 1:15 margin—may have been the best state meet performance by anyone in the country."

Goethals, who also earned Gatorade Michigan Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year honors in the spring of her junior year, has verbally committed to an athletic scholarship at the University of Washington this fall.

"Without question, Megan is deserving of recognition as the nation's best high school girls cross country runner based on her statistics on the course and the impact her accomplishments have had on Rochester High School's success," said Gatorade Senior Vice President of Sports Marketing Jennifer Storms. "But she is also a shining example to peers and aspiring young players of what a leader and a student-athlete should be. She represents everything we hope for in a Gatorade Player of the Year recipient."

Michigan Triathlon Events Continue to Increase

Triathons have continued to gain in popularity, with an 18% increase nationally over last year, according to Jim Donaldson of Elite Endeavors. Certainly a spin off of being a "Water Wonderland", has given Michigan a wonderful position in the sport. The major producers in the state are Elite Endeavors, 3 Disciplines, Element Events and Epic Races. There are also other tri's that are sponsored locally, with a total of 50 now scheduled for 2010 according to TriFind.com http://trifind.com

The Michigan Runner has some triathlon blood in us, as we published the Great Lake Triathlete for a few years in the 80's. Of late, we have captured a number of videos, primarily Elite Endeavors events, during the past five years. Michigan's running historian, Scott Hubbard, alerted us to Tracy Lokken's latest accomplishment as listed by David Monti's Race Results Weekly:
"Note that Tracy Lokken ran a 4:24.82 mile. Off the top of my head, that's the second fastest masters mile ever by a MI man after Bill Stewart's 4:11 from '83."

Bill Stewart's 4:11.00 still stands as the American Masters 1 Mile Indoor record.
